The Truth Behind the Chronicle

Article by: Aramé Retter (IRL: Joshua Black)

Everyone knows how to get published in the Chronicle. You just put it in the box outside Ed Pike’s dorm and, shadoop, shebop, shebang! Good ol’ Edward helps it find its way into the next issue. Or DOES HE????

Something’s fishy about that box. Have YOU ever seen him check it? I haven’t. And even ignoring that, when does he have the time to typeset everything? Have you SEEN his schedule? It’s almost like magic. Just last month, I snuck out at three in the morning just to slip in an old cafeteria receipt, and the very next morning, it’s on the third page of the Chronicle. Again, how?

That old cafeteria receipt is another thing. “Ed” shows no editorial discretion regarding what goes to print. Nobody is picking up the Chronicle to read my grocery bills (at least I hope). So why publish it? Does he think he can avoid responsibility for what he prints if he just prints everything? OR is there something deeper…? Could it be that Ed has nothing to do with the Chronicle?? Could it be that he’s a fraud??? I wouldn’t be surprised. Ladies and gentlemen, I can’t tell you who or what is behind the Rutnucker Chronicle, but it’s not Ed and I guarantee it.

The Great Mystery of the Mustard Thief

Story by: Renaine Foal (IRL: Joshua Black)

I write this article at the scene of the crime. Dijon mustard drips down the wallpaper like the tears of a baby crying over spilt milk—nay, over spilt mustard. You may wonder what happened and why. Do not fret; I will enlighten you. Last night, I woke up in a fit of hunger. Pains racked my mind until I was worn raw. Unsatisfied by bedtime crackers, I was forced to sidle my way to the student kitchens, desperately craving an emergency hotdog. You may find a hotdog to be strange at such an hour. But it is not. The hotdog is the modern miracle of cuisine.

I arrived at the kitchen. The floor was wet — perhaps the janitor had just come through. But something was odd. The kitchen was prepared for my midnight snack. The franks were thawed, only one remaining, as if it knew I would come. Even the ketchup bottle sat in its place, perfectly still, as per my command. And there upon the counter stood a beautiful sight: my gallon tub of mustard, my name etched upon it. Why it was there, I knew not. But my joy was immense.

I silently reached forward my fingers to grasp the mustard, bringing it into my tender arms. But in the last moment, a gloved hand sprung from the darkness, intercepting mine. I looked up in a feverish fury. The intruder was masked, obviously an effort to escape accountability for their crimes. They tried to take the mustard and run, for what sick purpose I did not know. But try as they might, I could not be deterred! I pummeled the thief with all I had, beating them to the ground. They pled for mercy. Against my rage, I relented. I took the mustard pail in hand, reclaiming my birthright.

As if to take advantage of my grace, they swept their leg under mine, toppling me to the floor where they lay. In near slow motion I fell, crying in despair as I watched the gallon tub of dijon mustard fly from my hands. It splattered against the wall. I looked around. The thief was gone, escaped in the confusion. I was alone, and alone I sit still. I mourn my mustard pail. I shall find the thief. I will. And my revenge shall be swift and terrible.

Mustard Murked in Midnight Madness

Article by: Joseph Pail (IRL: Joshua Black)

Early last Thursday Morning, a commotion hit the student kitchens. Renaine Foal, on a self-alleged “midnight hotdog quest”, was found alone with an empty gallon tub and a wall-enveloping glob of mustard. They'll tell you that they were attacked by a mysterious thief who then disappeared into the dead of night. But I ask you, is Renaine to be believed? Of course not. Their bibliography consists solely of pulp sensationalism dramatizing the smallest happenings. Surely it isn't out of character for them to lie, fabricating a mustard thief as cover. I beg you to consider, what other student would have interest in a gallon of mustard? None. Even if the attack were leveled against Renaine on a personal level, what student would have such a complete disrespect for them? It's absolutely ridiculous. So I ask you which is more believable: that Renaine spilled mustard and lied to cover it up, or that they were assaulted as result of an intensely personal grudge?

I know what I think.

Letter to Toothbrush Thief

To Whom It May Concern,

If you’re the one who stole my purple toothbrush, I want you to know that I used it to clean the oven in the student kitchens. I use the pink one for my mouth. Do with that information what you will.

— Jeremy Blithe (IRL: Joshua Black)

P.S. You’re welcome for cleaning the oven.

Apology to the Residents of the Boys Dorm 3rd Floor

Residents of the Boys Dorm 3rd Floor,

To everyone but Joe, I am truly sorry. I didn’t mean to cause distress. I was talking with Steph and she said someone was bugging her and it gave me an idea. If someone in a frog costume were chasing me with a pink bullwhip, I would be scared too. I know it’s a bad look to publish this anonymously but I really don’t want to get in trouble. I hope you understand.

Joseph Pail, you hurt my feelings. How did you write “Frog Freak Flies Down 3rd Floor Dorm” and think it was a good idea? HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE CALLED A FROG FREAK. BUT YOU DIDN’T THINK OF THAT BECAUSE YOU WERE FOCUSED ON YOUR CLEVER LITTLE FLY PUN. YOU KNOW WHAT? MAYBE YOU’RE THE FROG FREAK. WATCH YOUR BACK OR YOU’RE GONNA GET LICKED LIKE A FLY. THIS IS NO EMPTY THREAT I KNOW MY WAY AROUND A BULLWHIP.

Again, to everyone else, I am truly sorry. I dropped off a bag of frog gummies by the elevator last night; I hope that helps to make amends.
